There is a huge traffic snarl-up being witnessed along Thika road following a road accident around Garden City involving a van transporting children to school.
Images seen by The Kenya Times show the vehicle carrying school children has overturned, with passersby trying to rescue the children trapped in the vehicle.
Motorists using the Thika Road route have been stranded in traffic since 6:00 a.m. when the accident occurred.
Traffic police are currently at the scene, and the injured children have been rushed to the hospital.
The accident caused a major traffic jam stretching from Githurai 45 to the Garden City Mall area, affecting both lanes heading toward Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).
Heavy Traffic on Thika Road After Van Carrying Children Crashes
Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes to reach Nairobi CBD as traffic congestion persists on Thika Road.
“There’s a bad accident at Garden City along Thika Road… use alternative routes to town or hop on a motorbike,” said a social media user by the name MC Colins.”

The accident involving schoolchildren on Thika Road comes just days after a similar incident involving a Super Metro matatu occurred on the same road.
The Super Metro matatu was involved in an accident on June 10, 2025, just a few meters from Juja Town.
Several passengers were reported injured after the matatu overturned on Tuesday morning at the junction between an acceleration lane and the main highway.
NTSA Report on Accidents
Emergency response teams arrived at the scene. Videos seen by The Kenya Times showed the Super Metro bus overturned, with its front windscreen shattered.
Passersby quickly gathered at the scene to help evacuate the injured from the overturned vehicle.
On the same date of the accident Super Metro issued a statement stating that the cause of the accident was a result of a collision with a high-speed lorry. According to preliminary reports, the lorry was swerving at high speed before it struck the matatu.

According to the latest NTSA report from March 2025, 1,139 people died in road crashes in the first quarter. This is a slight decrease from the 1,166 fatalities in the same period in 2024.
However, the number is still high. Pedestrians are the most vulnerable group, with 420 deaths. Motorcyclists follow, with 301 fatalities. Other casualties include 189 passengers, 130 pillion passengers, 83 drivers, and 16 pedal cyclists.
