A police officer has been arrested in connection with the death of Albert Ojwang and is currently in police custody.
“Please be informed that No. 260950 PC James Mukhwana of Central Police Station Nairobi was arrested today, 12/06/2025 and placed in custody at Capitol Hill Police Station by officers from the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA),” reads the memo circulated to multiple law agencies.
He is set to face a murder charge under Section 203 as read with Section 204 of the Penal Code, in connection with the death of Albert Ojwang.
Police Officer Arrested
A signal was dispatched to Vigilance Nairobi, Criminal Nairobi, IPOA, Internal Affairs Nairobi, REGPOL, RCIO, Divisional Crime and Sub-County Police Commanders for Kilimani and Central, as well as the Central Police Station, notifying them of the arrest of PC James Mukhwana.
The case is expected to proceed to court once the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) finalize the murder charge.
IPOA Act of 2011, states that the authority is mandated to look into incidents involving deaths or serious harm resulting from police conduct.
Ruto Issues Orders Over Albert Ojwang Death
This follows President William Ruto order for a quick and transparent investigation into the death of X influencer and blogger Albert Ojwang, who died while in police custody.
In a statement on Wednesday, June 11, the President expressed shock over the incident, terming it “heartbreaking and unacceptable.”

At the same time, Ruto directed the National Police Service (NPS) to fully cooperate with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and ensure a thorough investigation is conducted.
President Ruto urged the National Police Service to extend full cooperation to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority and ensure all necessary steps are taken to support a swift, transparent, and credible investigation into the death of Ojwang.
According to the heads of state, the police officers may have been negligent and showed outright criminality, which may have contributed to the untimely death of Ojwang.

On the Night of His Death
On the morning of June 8, officers reported discovering Ojwang unconscious in the police cells. He was taken to Mbagathi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Ojwang was among five individuals allegedly behind posts claiming that DIG Lagat had strategically placed trusted officers in key positions to control revenue and intelligence flows within the National Police Service.
