Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has issued demands to President William Ruto’s administration over the death of Albert Ojwang.
In a statement on June 10, 2025, Raila said he is deeply horrified by reports of the young Kenyan, Albert Ojwang, who was picked from Homa Bay and driven to his death in police cells in Nairobi, over an alleged offensive social media post about a senior police officer.
“I have been deeply horrified by reports of a young Kenyan, Albert Ojwang, who was picked from Homa Bay and driven to his death in police cells in Nairobi, over an alleged offensive social media post about a senior police officer,” read part of the statement.
The Former Prime Minister said that while these deaths cause tremendous pain to individuals and their families, they seriously erode the authority and credibility of the police and the state, and that is a significant step towards chaos and collapse.
Raila Issues Demands
Raila raised concerns that, so far, nobody knows who gave the orders for Ojwang to be arrested and transported to Nairobi, yet that person should have been accountable to Kenyans.
At the same time, Raila has called for a speedy and credible closure to this latest incident of injustice in the hands of the police, alongside the many others that we have been pursuing since 2023.
“When citizens can no longer tell the difference between the two forms of injustice- police injustice and mob injustice- we are staring at the reality of failure as a nation,” read part of the statement.

He has called the National Police Service to commit and take concrete actions to hold their own accountable, beginning with the death of Albert Ojwang.
Additionally, he noted that Ojwang joins the horrifying long list of young and defenceless Kenyans whose lives have been taken too soon, in brutal and senseless circumstances, at the hands of the police.

Latest Development on Ojwang’ Death
A postmortem has established what caused the death of digital activist Albert Ojwang.
Government pathologist Dr Benard Midia said there were serious injuries to the head, features of neck compression and multiple soft tissue injuries that were spread all over the body, including the head, neck, upper limbs, trunk and lower limbs.
“The cause of death is very simple, as I have mentioned, head injury, neck compression and other injuries spread all over the body that are pointing towards assault,” Midia said.
Dr. Midia dismissed reports that Ojwang could have hit his head on the wall.
