DCI Ejects Traffickers Guised as Passengers from Matatu in Middle of Highway

The sleuths noted that they were acting from a tip-off.

Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested two suspects trafficking bales of bhang.

DCI in a statement on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, said that the two suspects were arrested while travelling in a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) matatu.

According to the DCI, the duo was travelling in a Nairobi-Bound PSV matatu that was coming from Busia when the arrests were made.

“Two suspects of trafficking in narcotics were early this morning ejected from a Nairobi-bound matatu from Busia at the Kangemi flyover,” read part of the statement.

The sleuths noted that they were acting from a tip-off when they arrested the duo and sized 16 bales of bhang stashed in their travel bags seized.

“The arrest of the two, Samuel Okello and Antony Omingo, followed a tip from members of the public, indicating presence of the illicit cargo at the Trippin Shuttle Sacco matatu they were traveling in.

According to the Investigative department, the two have been handed over to Anti-Narcotics detectives based at DCI headquarters for further processing.

The arrest comes days after DCI officers apprehended a suspected drug trafficker while travelling in another PSV in the month of April.

DCI in a statement then said that the 24-year-old suspect identified as Charles Obaga Kavehere was caught in a Nairobi-bound bus from Moyale.

He was forcibly removed from the bus by the sleuths and found to be carrying a substantial amount of cocaine.

According to the detectives, their anti-narcotics detectives supported by their Operations Support Unit (OSU) counterparts intercepted the bus belonging to Score Investment Ltd at the Blue Post Hotel area in Thika.

The officers who were acting on intelligence information further conducted a thorough search of the vehicle, leading to the discovery of 417 grams of cocaine hidden under the inner soles of the suspect’s shoes.

“A drug trafficker was early this morning ejected from a Nairobi-bound bus from Moyale and from him 417g of Cocaine discovered hidden under the inner soles of his rubber shoes,” read the statement by DCI.

High-speed Chase

Also, Police in Kisii April nabbed 14 sacks of bhang being ferried to an unknown destination in another 14-seater PSV matatu which was en route to Keroka.

Acting Kisii Central OCPD Kazungu Charo while confirming the incident told the press that the driver of the vehicle abandoned it after crashing into a ditch during a high-speed chase while attempting to evade police officers.

“We intercepted the vehicle which was being driven suspiciously. The officers gave chase and upon realizing this, the driver diverted it to a feeder road in Kegati where he eventually lost control, landing into a ditch,” he said.

Upon the search, the officers were able to seize 14 sacks of a product suspected to be bhang which were in the vehicle, with the OCPD saying that the vehicle was destined for either Nairobi, Bomet or Kericho.”

Following the escape, the police launched a manhunt for the vehicle’s driver who fled the scene on foot with the matatu and confiscated bhang being impounded at the Kisii Central Police Station.
