Nation Media Group (NMG), the largest independent media house in East and Central Africa, was founded by His Highness Aga Khan in 1959.
Daily Nation and Sunday Nation were first printed in 1960, while Taifa Leo was the first Swahili newspaper in Kenya.
As of December 31, 2024, the Group’s ownership comprised several entities and individuals.
The Agha Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED) is the largest shareholder.
It owns 92,618,177 shares, translating to 54.08 per cent.
Alpine Investment Limited is second with 21,050,222 shares, 12.29 per cent.
Standard Chartered Nominees Limited RESD A/C KE11450 and Kenya Commercial Bank Nominees Limited A/C 915 B have 2,512,210 shares (1.47 per cent) and 2,492,636 shares (1.46 per cent) respectively.
Shah, Lalitaben Kanaiyalal, is the fifth largest shareholder with 1,140,000 (0.67 per cent), followed by Kenya Reinsurance Corporation Limited with 1,054,152 (0.62 per cent).
Kimani John Kibunga has 978,540 shares (0.57 per cent) while Adam Munirabanu Alimohamed has 858,830 shares (0.50 per cent).
Jubilee Life Insurance Limited is ninth with 728,236 (0.43 per cent) and Standard Chartered Nominees A/C 1256B with 501,212 (0.29 per cent).
Distribution of Shareholding
As of 31 December 2024, the majority of NMG held smaller amounts of shares, while a small group controlled a big portion of the company.
Among them, a total of 5,422 entities each held between 1 and 500 shares, collectively holding 900,820 shares, accounting for 0.53 percent of the total.
There are 4,950 shareholders with between 501 and 5,000 shares, totalling 10,266,552 shares, representing 5.99 percent .
A smaller segment of 720 shareholders held between 5,001 and 10,000 shares, making up 3.04 percent of total ownership with 5,209,812 shares.

Meanwhile, 949 shareholders owned between 10,001 and 100,000 shares, contributing 22,004,969 shares or 12.85 percent of the total.
Larger holdings were seen among 55 shareholders who held between 100,001 and 1,000,000 shares, amounting to 12,016,097 shares, which represented 7.02 percent of the shareholding.
Only six shareholders held over 1,000,000 shares each.
This accounts for 120,867,397 shares or 70.57 percent of the company’s total shareholding.
Yasmin Jetha is the director of shareholding with 13,500 shares, accounting for 0.0079 percent.

Nation Media Group Brands
NMG has different brands in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda.
In Kenya, it operates Daily Nation, Business Daily, East African, NTV, Nation FM, Nation Courier, Nation Sema, Kenya Buzz, Nairobi News and Taifa Leo.
NMG operates Daily Monitor, Sunday Monitor,NTV Uganda, KFM, and Dembe FM in Uganda.
The Group also owns The Citizen, Mwananchi and Mwanaspoti of Tanzania.
NMG also circulates The East African and Nation.Africa across the East Africa offering regional news and analysis.
