Mbagathi Hospital is a Level 4 County Referral Hospital operated by the Nairobi City County Government.
Mbagathi Hospital background
Initially known as South Hill Hospital for Infectious Diseases, the hospital was commissioned by Sir Fredrick Crawford in 1956.
It served as an isolation facility for Kenyatta National Hospital (then King George VI Hospital), treating diseases like Tuberculosis, Measles, Cholera, Leprosy, Meningitis, and Diarrheal Epidemics.

The hospital is situated in the Kenyatta Golf Course Location, Kibra Sub-County, Woodley/Golf Course Ward, adjacent to the Kibra informal settlement.

The institution acts as the referral facility for the Nairobi Metropolis catchment area with a population of more than one million people.
Services
Mbagathi Hospital operates 24/7, offering medical, surgical, rehabilitative, diagnostic, and mortuary services. The bed capacity has grown from 266 to 320, with a 200% inpatient bed occupancy rate.
Specialised units include the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), which has four beds, 48 incubators, and a four-bed infectious unit for preterm or low-birth-weight babies.
The Renal Unit provides hemodialysis for in- and outpatients with kidney disease, with two sessions per week per patient.
The Pediatric Unit in Mbagathi caters to children aged 1 month to 13 years, with the Dentistry Clinic open Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM, offering general dentistry.
Diagnostic Imaging services are offered and includes abdominal, chest, and bone X-rays, with plans for CT scans, mammograms, and MRIs; also offers ultrasound imaging.
Ophthalmology Clinic treats eye ailments, infections, and conducts visual acuity tests and special clinics like Antenatal, Well Baby, and Renal Dialysis clinics, operating Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM.
Comprehensive Care Clinic in Mbagathi Hospital manages over 2,000 HIV patients at any time, while Public Health services focus on disease surveillance, community outreach, and free medical services for vulnerable groups like the homeless and victims of domestic violence.
The institution hosts the Nairobi County Cancer Diagnostic and Treatment Centre, offering all treatments related to Cancer care.
The physiotherapy clinic recently acquired new equipment to resume stopped services, and the hospital laboratory recently achieved ISO 15189:2022 accreditation for quality standards for their improved standards.
Infrastructure and achievements
Mbagathi Hospital underwent major renovations in 2023-2024 to improve healthcare provision, aligning with Nairobi County’s health sector goals.
The hospital plans to launch a second ICU unit in Nairobi County, following Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital.
The hospital is also certified as an Approved Internship Training Center by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
Mbagathi Hospital also signed an MOU with Great Lakes University of Kisumu for student placements in 2024.

The hospital established a 160-bed isolation center during COVID-19, now used for cholera isolation.
It was elected as the best Level 5 hospital in 2024, and Dr. Eric Kanjama was also honoured for exemplary contributions.
Directions from Nairobi CBD (Central Business District)
Distance: Approximately 5-7 km (depending on the route).
Driving (10-20 minutes, depending on traffic):
Head southwest on Kenyatta Avenue toward Moi Avenue.
Turn left onto Uhuru Highway (A104).
Continue straight, passing Nyayo Stadium.
At the Langata Road roundabout, take the 2nd exit onto Langata Road.
Turn right onto Mbagathi Way (near T-Mall).
Continue on Mbagathi Way for about 1 km; Mbagathi Hospital will be on your left.
Public Transport (Matatu/Bus, 20-30 minutes):
From the CBD, go to the Kencom or Ambassador bus stages.
Board a matatu or bus to Ngong Road or Kibra (e.g., Route 125/126).
Alight at the Mbagathi Way junction (near T-Mall or Kenyatta Golf Course).
Walk about 5-10 minutes along Mbagathi Way to the hospital entrance.
