Netizens and fans of NRG radio Uganda have raised concerns over the firing of renowned emcee and DJ Edith Ndagire Etania popularly known as the life of the party.
In a statement addressed to Etania, dated July 1, NRG stated that it had terminated her services with the radio station.
“As discussed, dignity and mutual respect are core values at NRG. After our conversation, we think that the best way forward for all parties involved is to terminate your services with NRG,” the statement read.
NRG mentioned that they were letting Etania go as part of their disciplinary process following the conclusion of her performance improvement plan.
Moreover, NRG informed her that she was entitled to her salary until July 3rd and requested that she return all company property.
“This is the final decision as part of the company’s disciplinary process after the end of your performance improvement plan. You are entitled to your salary up until 3rd July,” NRG said.
“Please return all company property, including IDs and laptop to the Human Resources office on the same date. Human Resources will give you a detailed letter with your full compensation details.”

According to NRG, the emcee was dismissed for violating the non-compete and non-disclosure agreement which forbids her from working with competition for a year or revealing business information to any other parties during the process.
“Please keep in mind that you signed a non-compete and non-disclosure agreement, and as such, you are prohibited from working with competition a year or revealing business information to any other parties during the process,” the statement said.

Following Etania’s dismissal, Lead Presenter BBC News host Alan Kasujja weighed in on the matter noting that You can’t deprive someone of their right to earn a living the one way they know how.
“It’s a standard line for all the radio contracts I have ever signed. I’ve always thought it’s nonsensical. You can’t deprive someone of their right to earn a living the one way they know how. I hope she ignores it, and it ends up being tested in court,” Alan said.
Likewise, another user Ojilong1 wondered why she was not allowed to work elsewhere while noting that NRG is known for poaching talent.
“So do they specify competitors in their contracts? This one particularly is known for poaching talent from competitors why then bar them from falling back to where they started,” he stated.
VIIOOI felt that leaking her dismissal letter was meant to make her unemployable, while noting that they were playing her dirty.

“The thing is any future employer could be added to the lawsuit against her, even if it lacks merit. Leaking the letter is meant to make her unemployable, no one will want to touch her. They’re playing dirty – she could find a lawyer and do the same,” he noted.
Author and Consultant AKasingye questioned why an employer would terminate an employee and additionally prohibit them from working with a competitor.
“Did I miss something? How can a company sack you and thereafter prohibit you from working with a competitor? What kind of contracts do you guys’ consent to?” Asan wondered.
Eyebare stated that, “I thought by terminating my agreement with a party, I no longer have any obligations to them. why would they still go ahead and impose caveats on me?”
