Controversial Bishop Gilbert Deya has died following a tragic road accident at Namba Kapiyo along the Kisumu–Bondo highway.
Nyanza Regional Traffic Enforcement Officer Peter Maina said the accident involved three vehicles: a Toyota Noah driven by Deya, a Moi University bus, and a Siaya County government vehicle.
The bus was carrying Moi University students on an educational tour in Bondo.
Maina said Deya lost control of the vehicle and veered into the path of the University bus.
The bus veered off the road and fell on its side while trying to avoid a head-on collision with other vehicles.
After which Deya’s vehicle collided with the county government vehicle.
Deya was accompanied by his wife and another woman, both of whom sustained minor injuries.
Maina said Deya died on the spot, and his body was taken to the Kombewa Sub-County Hospital mortuary.
“We have since learned that the driver of the Toyota Noah who died was Pastor Gilbert Deya. This was confirmed by his wife, who was also in the vehicle alongside a female passenger,” Maina said.
Moi University Injured
15 Moi University students sustained serious injuries and were referred to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu for treatment.
Meanwhile, 13 others escaped with minor injuries and were admitted to Kombewa Sub-County Hospital in Seme.
Maina said that the occupants of the Siaya County Government vehicle escaped unhurt.
