Kenyatta University has issued joining instructions to its incoming freshmen for the 2024/2025 intake, outlining a set of strict rules and regulations aimed at maintaining order and discipline on campus.

The guidelines, which take effect immediately a student arrives at the institution, cover a range of issues, from the use of motor vehicles to noise levels and alcohol consumption.

In a 26-page document seen by The Kenya Times, the university made it clear that students with cars will not be allowed to keep them on campus without written permission from the Academic Registrar.

To obtain this permission, students must provide proof of a valid driving license, road tax license, and current certificate of insurance.

“A student may not keep a motor vehicle on University premises without written permission from the Registrar (Administration): such permission will not be given without proof of a current driving license, a valid road tax license and current certificate of insurance.”

However, the university noted that it reserves the right to refuse or withdraw such permission without providing any reason, leaving students with little room for negotiation.

Students Warned Against Noise Pollution

Additionally, the students were also warned against creating unnecessary noise or behaving in an unruly manner, the university noted that these activities were strictly prohibited.

“It shall be an offence against university regulations to create unreasonable noise or behave in an unruly or rowdy manner to the disturbance or annoyance of other occupants of university premises,” states part of instructions from the Academic Registra. 

“This rule aims to ensure a peaceful and conducive learning environment for all students, and any student found violating this rule can expect severe consequences.”

Alcohol Consumption & Drunkenness

While the consumption of alcohol is not entirely prohibited, the university noted that it would take a firm stance against drunkenness and disturbances caused by intoxicated students.

Drunkenness and the resulting disruption of other students’ activities are considered serious offenses, and students are warned that if found guilty, they can expect to face disciplinary action.

Drug Consumption

The Institution emphasized that possession or use of drugs was strictly forbidden.

“It is a serious offence against University regulations to possess or take drugs as a student of this University.”

This rule is in line with the university’s commitment to maintaining a drug-free campus and promoting a healthy lifestyle among its students.

Demonstrating

The university also has strict guidelines regarding processions, demonstrations, and gatherings.

It is a serious offense for any student or group of students to organize, participate in, or be involved in any demonstrations, gatherings, or processions without obtaining prior permission from the university authorities.

Additionally, students are prohibited from organizing or participating in pickets or preventing any student or staff member from performing their duties.

Consequences of Not Adhering to the Stipulated Instructions

The university noted that a student who fails to adhere to these rules will appear before the Senate Students Disciplinary Committee.

This committee, composed of various university officials and student representatives, is responsible for handling general offenses committed by students in their day-to-day activities within the university.

However, the penalties for violating these rules vary depending on the gravity of the offense and may include letters of warning, payment for damages, suspension from the university for a specific period, expulsion from halls of residence, or even expulsion from the university altogether.

In some cases, the university council may expel a student without reference to the disciplinary committee if they are found guilty of:

• Boycotting lectures.
• Maliciously damaging university property.
• Assaulting staff members
• Being convicted of a serious criminal offense by a court of law.
