Police officers are among those who have died in a grisly road accident in the early hours of Sunday, June 15.
The officers were among others who were responding to an earlier road accident near Kinangop in Nyandarua County involving two motorcycles.
According to the police report filed under OB No. 02/15/06/2025 at 1:30 am, the accident happened at around 1:20 am at the Chuma area, 3km from Kinangop Police Station.
Consequently, the officers from Kinangop and the traffic department rushed to the scene of the accident to lead a police rescue mission.
However, a speeding silver Isuzu D-Max double-cabin pickup (KBT 522N) slammed into the rescue operation.

The vehicle crashed into a stationary police vehicle, registration number GKB 679T, and a parked lorry, before ploughing into a crowd of officers and civilians.
Among those who died on the spot are Sergeant Dickson Kilonzo, an officer from Kinangop Police Station who was on duty, Police Constable Gilbert Makori, and the driver of the pickup, Ben Wakivi.
The bodies of the deceased were moved to the Engineer Sub-County Hospital Mortuary for preservation and postmortem examinations.
Other Police Officers, Including DCI, Rushed to the Hospital
Eight others were rushed to North Kinangop Mission Hospital with injuries.
They include Edwin Mungai Kamau, an Assistant Inspector General from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Headquarters, who suffered a fractured left leg.
Corporal/Driver Hesbon Mwangi sustained head injuries, while Corporal Abdi Hassan complained of chest pains, and Corporal Boniface Libuthi was injured on the right leg.
Others injured were Lucy Nyambura Wanjiku, 20, with a left leg injury, Peter Macharia Karanja, 47, with general body pain, Daniel Kibebo Wainoga, 28, with a left leg injury, and Dominic Waweru, 30, who suffered a fractured left leg.

Confirming the incident, Nyandarua County Commissioner Abdirisack Jaldesa described the incident as a dark morning for the county, explaining that a thorough investigation will be conducted.
“This is a heartbreaking event that has cost us the lives of dedicated officers and endangered civilians. We are working closely with investigators to determine the circumstances and ensure accountability,” he said.
Nyandarua County Police Commander Stella Cherono said that several senior officers visited the scene, including the Sub-County Police boss, the local criminal investigations officer, and traffic and crime scene teams who recorded what happened.
Further, she added that the head of traffic in Kinangop was leading the investigation and promised the public that all details will be shared openly.
