Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Eliud Lagat has been on the spot ever since police boss Douglas Kanja revealed that he filed a complaint against the late Albert Ojwang.
Kanja said Lagat raised a complaint that several social media users were spreading false information about him.
“There was a complaint that had been logged by the DIG KPS (Eliud Lagat) that his name was being tarnished, and that is why Albert Ojwang was arrested,” Kanja said.
Nairobi County Woman Representative Esther Passaris has now revealed how Lagat reacted to Ojwang’s death.
Passaris calimed that she was with DIG Lagat during a Kenya Alliance of Residents Association meeting on Sunday, June 8, when the news broke.
According to Passaris, Lagat seemed to be unaware of the situation and was surprised.
She noted that his reaction did not resemble that of someone informed or involved, but rather someone caught off guard.
“He was completely out of the loop. His composure reflected genuine surprise, not that of someone aware of, let alone involved in, the death of Albert Ojwang,” Passaris said.
She asked for a thorough investigation into Ojwang’s death, stating that the real killers should be arrested and not scapegoats.
“Let the investigations be thorough and impartial. The real perpetrators must be brought to book, not scapegoats,” she added.

Ngunyi Defends Eliud Lagat
Passaris was responding to a tweet by political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi, who raised similar concerns.
Ngunyi mentioned that someone could have used police networks to kill Ojwang and then falsely pinned the blame on DIG Lagat.
He warned that hardening of public opinion leaves no room for facts making it easy for the real killer to escape justice.
“If I killed Albert Ojwang using police networks, then blamed it on DIG Lagat, who would defend Eliud Lagat? He has no rights. Why? We have made up our minds. Do not confuse us with the facts. If I killed Ojwang, and we push for Lagat’s arrest, the killer would walk free. True?” Ngunyi asked.

Theuri Bashes Passaris
Former President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Eric Theuri dismissed Passaris’s arguments about Lagat’s involvement.
Theuri said Ojwang was arrested for defaming Lagat.
He alleged that the blogger was picked, tortured and killed by police officers
“Obviously, some simple things are beyond your comprehension. Albert was arrested because he allegedly made a false publication against saint Eliud,” Theuri said.
“He was picked up by juniors of saint Eliud working under his command. He was tortured & strangled to death by juniors of your saint Eliud. In a cell under the command of saint Eliud.”
